Information
The cornerstone of obesity treatment involves consuming fewer calories than are expended to mobilize and oxidize endogenous triglycerides as fuel. At a minimum, all obesity treatment regimens must emphasize changes in lifestyle behaviors that promote decreasing energy intake and increasing levels of physical activity. This includes those regimens that employ the use of pharmacologic agents or bariatric surgical procedures.
Through the use of case studies, this program looks at clinical results achieved through the use of unique approaches to weight management at three different institutions. The first is a lifestyle patterns approach which uses behavior modification techniques. The second approach involves the use of a very low calorie diet (VLCD) in obese patients who have type 2 diabetes. The third approach concerns the under recognized and frequently ignored problem of weight regain in patients who have undergone bariatric surgical procedures.
Disclaimers This program was prepared from presentations given at the Clinical Management of Obesity Roundtable Luncheon that took place on November 16, 2004 at the 2004 NAASO Annual Scientific Meeting. None of the members of the Editorial Board of Obesity Online were in attendance at this live program, nor did they have advance knowledge of the content of these presentations.
The unique approaches and results described in these presentations represent the experience of the individual presenters and their affiliated institutions. Their inclusion in this CME activity does not represent an endorsement of these approaches by NAASO, The Obesity Society, or the members of the Editorial Board of Obesity Online. Participants should carefully evaluate these proceedings before making a determination as to the potential applicability of these approaches in their clinical practice.
